Cost evaluation

Measure your own local-development cost trade-off

LocalCloud does not publish a maintained savings benchmark. Use your own billing exports, workload profile, hardware cost, engineering time, and production-validation requirements.

Method

Build a reproducible comparison

Record assumptions instead of copying generalized percentages or dollar ranges.

1. Establish the baseline

Use dated billing exports to isolate developer, test, staging, and CI usage by service. Exclude unrelated production spend.

2. Define the workflow

List exact SDK versions, services, operations, data volume, test frequency, retention, and required fidelity.

3. Check evidence

Map each operation to the compatibility contract. Release-unverified and unsupported behavior needs a different test path.

4. Include local costs

Account for compute, storage, Docker infrastructure, maintenance, developer time, and the cost of failed fidelity assumptions.

5. Keep production validation

Budget for guarded tests against real Google Cloud for IAM, quotas, regional behavior, managed integrations, performance, and release confidence.

6. Measure, do not extrapolate

Run a time-boxed evaluation and compare observed bills and cycle time. Publish the date, hardware, workload, and exclusions with any result.

Estimate checklist

  • Dated billing data with project and service filters.
  • The LocalCloud image or CLI release being considered.
  • Service support levels and known gaps.
  • Local infrastructure and maintenance cost.
  • Real-GCP release-validation scope.
  • Governing license review for the intended user and purpose.
